25 Years with Stephen Lack: Paintings from 1984-2009
Playing with Cars, 2008, oil on canvas, 9" x 12"
This exhibit includes work produced during the glory days of New York's East Village up to the present. Over the twenty-five years represented in this show, Stephen's voice has remained consistent. His palette and technique may have evolved, but his narrative remains relevant and compelling.
Themes of power, authority, and the menace of contemporary urban life cycle through these canvases, rendered in a highly expressive and economical style. Muscle cars arranged in a grid are diminished symbols of sex and power, while the suburban life is no longer aspirational but bleak and menacing.
