The Peter Miller Gallery is pleased to open the 2001-2002 season with an exhibition of new paintings by Julie Heffernan.
Julie Heffernan
Julie Heffernan's new paintings continue to investigate the changing role of women as depicted in Western European painting. Often titled Self Portraits, her paintings are a synthesis of the diverse accumulation of imagery, both 'high' and 'low,' dispersed throughout our lives. Drawing upon art history, mythology and other sources, she layers this visual information and allows it to build into a singular and deeply personal narrative. This series of canvases directs the viewer to a revisionist reading of art history where the historically male tradition of allegorical painting is given a female voice.
