Brian Ulrich and Jonathan Gitelson are both Chicago-based photographers fascinated by the poetic narrative present in daily life. They recently received MFAs from Columbia College, Chicago, and will be opening their first one person shows with Peter Miller Gallery.
Brian's series of candid photographs shows people in shopping malls, grocery stores, and discount centers. His images capture that near-trancelike state people often fall into when they're shopping. This series has both humor and a certain amount of pathos, -- sad and funny how some people turn to consumerism for comfort.
Jonathan's photographs and books tell stories of urban life. Unlike Brian, Jonathan stages his photographs, using traditional pictorial conventions to construct witty and poignant narratives. His books are self-deprecating and wildly funny, taking good-natured pokes at the daily dramas of our lives.
