New Paintings by Julie Heffernan

More Recent Work

Julie Heffernan has been exploring the use of allegory in narrative painting for over 20 years. This exhibit brings together new paintings along with preparatory studies, affording the viewer with a look into Julie's working process.

These self-portraits may quote a language that is redolent of past visual traditions, however, Heffernan has shifted this vocabulary away from its historically male dominated bias towards an idiosyncratic and resolutely female voice. In her figurative paintings, as well as in her paintings of interiors, the conflict between the natural and the man-made is ever-present. The vulnerability of civilization's artifice is apparent in her rendering of a richly ornamented room where birds swirl around flames licking upwards towards
nymphs cavorting in a frescoed ceiling. Humanity's attempts to control its environment inevitably yield to natural forces as buildings crumble and cities burn.
